As part of SERI’s core commitment to active stakeholder and public involvement, R2:2013 (latest version), and all future versions of the R2 Standard, are developed in accordance with the Essential Requirements for Due Process of the American National Standards Institute.
EPA (United States Environmental Agency) encourages all electronics recyclers to become certified by demonstrating to an accredited, independent third-party auditor that they meet specific standards to safely recycle and manage electronics. Currently two accredited certification standards exist: the Responsible Recycling (“R2”) Standard for Electronics Recyclers
Electronics Recycling Downstream

Road Map for R2, RIOS, & e-Stewards Certification
R2 certification is a two-part process,
First, we (Core Compliance) evaluates companies internal processes and procedures and align the documentation with SERI (R2 housing body) established requirements for certification. We implement and train the companies employees on R2 requirements to maintain compliance to prepare for the certification audit.
Second, a certification body, also referred to as a “registrar”, performs an audit to assess compliance with the standard and the organization’s declared management system. Upon a successful audit, the organization is granted a certificate of compliance from the trusted third party registrar. The organization undergoes additional but lesser surveillance audits at least annually thereafter for 3 years until the certification then expires and requires a re-certification.
